CBSE mulls to discard half-yearly, annual exams till class XI
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has taken one-step forward to the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministrys decision to do away with the archaic system and switch over to Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) mode up to Class VIII.
The CBSE has recently proposed to discard the annual and half-yearly mode of examinations in schools until class XI from the coming 2011-12 session and have introduced the CCE up to Class X replacing the board examination from the 2010-11 session.

DTU Welcomes Foreign Students from the New Session 2010
Year 2010 onwards Delhi Technological University (DTU), earlier the Delhi College of Engineering, would enroll foreign students, non-resident Indians (NRI) and persons of Indian origin (PIO). In a recent meeting, the academic council of the university decided that 15 per cent of the seats, over and above the sanctioned intake would be reserved for such candidates. P.B. Sharma, DTU Vice-Chancellor said that the admission of foreign students will facilitate and enhance cultural exchange between the students and give them a global perspective.

Punjab to Get 13 New Government Colleges
In the year 2010 on directives issued by State Government, 13 new government colleges will be set up across the state of Punjab. According to the State Government officials, on February 4, 2010, a uniform building layout plan for all these colleges was finalized at a meeting between Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and a panel of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

India offers 100 Fellowships to Afghan Farm Students
External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna announced two Indian initiatives to help assist the rebuilding efforts in Afghanistan.
Mr. Krishna said in a statement that since agriculture was key to Afghanistans development, India had decided to offer 100 fellowships every year over the next five years for its agricultural students to do Masters and Ph.D. programs in Indian universities.

CAT Re-test: 9400 Students Likely to appear
Online CAT (Common Admission Test) 2009 exam was IIMs first attempt to shift paper pencil exam format to computer based testing. However, the new technique got marred, due to technical problems and poor management, thereby affecting students in as many as 24 test centres in 13 cities across the country. A total of 9400 students would appear for the CAT re-test scheduled to be conducted this weekend. But, Prometric, the organizer of the entrance exam to the IIMs, is not promising a glitch-free re-test.

10% Quota for FCs in Colleges Upheld
A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Wednesday upheld a government order reserving 10 per cent of the total seats in government colleges and 7.5 per cent of the seats in universities for students belonging to the forward communities under the below poverty line category.
The Bench comprising Chief Justice S.R. Bannurmath and Justice A.K. Basheer upheld the order while dismissing a writ petition filed by the Kerala Muslim Jamaath Council against the order.

B Ed & D Ed Course Duration Doubled
Aspiring teachers will have to devote one year extra, as the duration of Bachelor of Education (B Ed) and Diploma in Education (D Ed) programme is doubled. The step is taken in order to make teachers more professional. It is supposed that professional preparation involves extended and intense training and the existing period is not sufficient. As per sources, the change would be made in the new curriculum framework, which the National Council of Teacher Training (NCTE) would bring out in February. However, it would take at least four years for all institutions to implement the new formula.

Indian Oil plans to hire 250 staff this year
Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) plans to recruit 250 people this year primarily to fill the vacancies in its engineering
division, a top company official has said.
Indias largest oil firm would deploy the new staff in all its 10 refineries across the country, Indian Oil Director (HR) V C Agrawal told PTI in mumbai.

IIT Kharagpur Launches Bio-Energy Centre
January 5, 2010, Indias first bio-energy centre was launched at the Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur (IIT-K). The bio-energy centre was launched for undertaking research, teaching and technological implementation of conventional and non-conventional energy.
Prabhakant Sinha, IIT alumnus and Founder & Co-Chairman of ZS Associates, said that Centre for Bio-Energy would aim to create an industry consortium to engage in industrial research.

The Union Cabinet on Tuesday decided to raise the salaries of the faculty of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences and four other medical institutes of excellence, and bring them at par with what is offered in the Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institutes of Management.

Calibre Management Aptitude Test (CMAT), a national-level management aptitude test held for admission to over 50 business schools in the country, will be held on February 28, 2010.
CMAT 2010 Forms would be available till February 6 and the last date for submitting the CMAT forms is February 10. The scores this test will be used in the CMAT admission process.

Ten new Polytechnic colleges to come up in Rajasthan
Jaipur: The Pink City is all set to shine with ten new highly standardized Polytechnic colleges soon to be launched with the aid of the Centre.
The Central Government has estimated a whopping Rs.123 crore on the project and has initially sanctioned Rs.12 crores.
These colleges would be developed as model colleges of the state.
The technical education department has decided that these colleges would come up in Bundi, Dausa, SriGanganagar, Hanumangarh, Jalore, Jhunjhunu, Karauli, Nagaur, Pali and Tonk.
The department Chief Secretary, Mr. Vipin Chandra Sharma informed that, "The construction of new buildings for colleges would start soon. According to the guidelines issued by the centre, these colleges would have modern apparatus and best faculty akin to the best Polytechnic colleges of the country."
Permission has also been granted for Polytechnic colleges in Baran, Dholpur, Jaiselmer, Dungarpur and Pratapgarh.
The admission procedure at the institutes will start from the new academic session.

IGNOU to open more Community Colleges
The Indira Gandhi National Open University - IGNOU plans to increase the number of its community colleges across the country, said V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice-Chancellor of the University, to reporters here on Tuesday.
About 12,000 students were enrolled in the community colleges it had opened since July this year. Of these, nearly 4,000 were in 50 colleges in Tamil Nadu. The University planned to touch 500 colleges in the country in two years.

IGNOU Starts Regular PG Programmes
India largest Open University, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), has begun offering post-graduate programmes in the regular mode, its Vice-Chancellor has said. But only select programmes are being offered in this manner.
According to the Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU, V N Rajsekharan Pillai, the university has decided to adopt the flexible modes of education delivery, which is a combination of face-to-face, distance and on-line approaches of dissemination, to keep in pace with the international trends of education.

Kendriya Vidyalayas to Educate Handicapped
The government disclosed on Thursday that Kendriya Vidyalayas will be offering education to handicapped students across India.
According to Human Resource Development Minister, Kapil Sibal, who was addressing a Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan meeting, this exemption will be effective from the beginning of October.
The decision will immediately benefit over 2,500 students.

DRDO Recruits More IIT Graduates This Year
More IIT graduates have opted for the jobs in Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), this time, due to stability factor. Brilliant graduates from the IITs were known for bagging top-notch offers from multinationals, with six-figure salaries. AIEEE may go Online from next Year
The government has set up a committee of National Institute of Technology (NIT) directors to explore the possibility of making the AIEEE exam online, in addition to the regular pen and paper test. The committee will submit its report by January 2010.
The committee will also deliberate on giving Class XII board exam marks weightage during the entrance exam. This came up after NIT directors said that the proliferation of coaching institutes was skewing the pattern of entrants into NITs.

Cyber Security Course Should Be Introduced In Schools And Colleges
Cyber Security expert Ankit Fadia has called for the introduction of cyber security courses in schools and colleges. The 24-year-old Ankit has also proposed setting up of police cyber cells manned by tech-savvy officers to prevent online attacks.
Fadia calls himself an ethical hacker and advises companies, governmental bodies and security agencies both in India and abroad on cyber security. He also said that India should look for international cooperation to check cyber crimes

100 percent placements for IIM Kozhikode Students
All 309 students of the thirteenth batch (2009 - 11) of the Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode (IIM - K) were selected for summer internship as the process concluded on the campus near here on Thursday.
An IIM - K release claimed that it was the first IIM to announce 100 percent summer internship this year. Over 120 firms participated in the placement process.
